Terms and Conditions:

  1. By clicking the join button and completing this transaction you are certifying that you meet the eligibility requirements to join the American Legion as listed below.
  2. There are 140 Posts located throughout our State. Members are required to affiliate with one of the Posts to continue membership. There is no additional charge to transfer to a local Post if done within the calendar year in which you join. You can locate Posts in your area at mdlegion.org/PostMapPage.htm
  3. This transaction is the act of joining a temporary holding Post, and transferring to a regular Post based off of selection or provided zip code  is required for members joining online through our Portal. A Post representative shall contact you to facilitate the transfer process. You will additionally receive a package including your member ID card, transfer form, and letter explaining the transfer process.
  4. The Post that contacts the Holding Post member shall require proof of membership eligibility in order to complete transfer of membership affiliation.
  5. When contacted if prospective member fails to prove eligibility in a reasonable period of time or is determined to be not eligible based off of a review of documents submitted, that membership shall be cancelled and all dues payments made to date shall not be returned.

Eligibility for membership in The American Legion is set forth as follows: Any person shall be eligible for membership in The American Legion who was a member of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, or Air Force of the United States and assigned to active duty at some time during any of the following periods:

  • April 6, 1917 - November 11, 1918
  • December 7, 1941 - December 31, 1946
  • June 25, 1950 - January 31, 1955
  • February 28, 1961 - May 7, 1975
  • August 24, 1982 - July 31, 1984
  • December 20, 1989 - January 31, 1990
  • August 2, 1990, to the cessation of hostilities as determined by the government of the United States
All above dates inclusive, or who, being a citizen of the United States at the time of his entry therein, served on active duty in the armed forces of any of the governments associated with the United States during any of said periods; provided, however, that such service shall have been terminated by honorable discharge or honorable separation, or continued honorably after any of said periods; provided further, that no person shall be entitled to membership who, being in such service during any of said periods, refused on conscientious, political or other grounds to subject himself to military discipline or unqualified service.
